A termite mound in the Zimbabwean bushveld can rise nine metres into the sky. Inside, millions of termites farm a fungus that must be kept at exactly 30 degrees, even as outside temperatures swing from freezing at night to above 40 by afternoon. There is no thermostat, no external power source. The mound regulates its own climate through a network of tunnels the colony continuously adjusts, built by insects with no architect and no blueprint, using only the materials at hand.
In 1996, architect Mick Pearce studied this system and built the Eastgate Centre, a 55,000-square-metre office and retail complex in Harare with no conventional air conditioning. It uses the termite mound’s principles, thermal mass, passive ventilation, natural convection, to regulate its own temperature year-round. Eastgate uses 35 percent less energy than comparable buildings in Harare with full HVAC systems, cost 10 percent less to build, and has operated continuously for thirty years.
What this proves is that sophisticated infrastructure does not have to be imported. It can be built from local intelligence, adapted to local conditions, and outperform imported solutions on the terms that actually matter.
Africa’s universities were not built that way.
The series so far
Africa’s competitive advantage in the AI era is judgment, not scale. The honey badger essay made that case. The baobab essay pushed it upstream, to early childhood, where judgment’s precursors first form, and closed by pointing ahead to the university gate.
This is that essay. And here, Africa is largely still building skyscrapers borrowed from somewhere else.
The blueprint problem
Most African universities inherited a European research model adapted for the colonial project of producing civil servants and administrators. That model was built for a labour market that no longer exists.
The results are visible. Only 9 percent of young Africans have completed tertiary education as of 2025, according to the Mastercard Foundation’s 2026 Africa Youth Employment Outlook. In Algeria, Egypt, and Morocco, roughly 30 percent of those who do complete tertiary education are unemployed or inactive. In South Africa, graduate unemployment stood at 12.2 percent in Q1 2026 against a national rate of 32.7 percent, better than the alternative, but still a signal the system produces more of the wrong graduate than the right one. In Ghana, a 2026 study found over half of graduates only began job searching after graduation, and nearly a quarter took more than a year to find first employment.
The skyscraper looks impressive. It does not work in the climate it was built for.
Reform is real, but it is scaffolding, not redesign
South Africa’s Department of Higher Education has released enrolment planning for 2026 to 2030 prioritising scarce skills. Kenya and Rwanda are linking faculties to private-sector hubs. South African universities are running serious graduate placement programmes, and the Youth Employment Service has placed nearly 58,000 young people since January 2025.
All useful. None of it questions the underlying blueprint. Most reform assumes the model is correct and needs updating, more partnerships, more work-integrated learning, more placement platforms bolted onto an existing structure. That is scaffolding attached to a building never designed for this climate, not a redesign of the building itself.
A termite-designed university starts from a different question: not how do we make our existing structure more employable, but what would higher education look like if built from the ground up for an economy where AI makes execution cheap and judgment valuable, where careers will not resemble the ones this generation’s parents had.
What that would actually require
The employer relationship has to be structural, not decorative, shaping curriculum and assessment rather than sitting alongside them. Rwanda’s African Leadership University and Ghana’s Ashesi University already do this at small scale, and their graduates enter the labour market able to do the work rather than needing to be retrained for it.
The credential has to become continuous rather than terminal. A four-year degree certifying a person for life assumed knowledge would stay valid for a career. It no longer does.
And the disciplinary walls have to loosen. Problems worth solving in the AI era rarely respect the boundaries between physics, economics, and literature that a nineteenth-century department structure still enforces.
The reframing that matters
Higher education has been asked to be many things: the elevator of social mobility, the guarantor of prestige, the training ground for professions. All remain important. What has not been argued with equal conviction is that in an AI-saturated economy, the university’s central job may be different from all of these. It may be producing graduates who can think, judge, and adapt across a working life no four-year degree can fully prepare them for.
That is a redesign question, not an update question.
Where this leaves the pipeline
The termite mound is not a lesser structure than the skyscraper. It is a different one, engineered for different constraints, doing the job the imported model cannot do without energy the continent cannot keep supplying.
